In the five years after the 1925 Paris exhibition, New York went Art Deco all at once. Developers, sculptors and architects raced each other into the sky along 42nd Street, and what they left behind is still here, mostly unnoticed, on blocks you may have already walked a hundred times.
Over two hours, your guide shows you how to read it. Start inside Grand Central. Trace the bronze frieze on the Chanin Building where the story of evolution stops just short of us. Step into the Chrysler Building’s triangular lobby of African red granite. Drop into the passages running under Rockefeller Center, stand beneath Atlas, and finish at the hotel Georgia O’Keeffe painted at night.
